Wearing face masks still optional within NCR

San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora, said in an interview with TeleRadyo on Wednesday, May 17, that wearing face masks will stay optional for the National Capital Region in the meantime, as the rising cases are still within a low-risk category.

He noted that the hospitalization rate in Metro Manila remains at 29% despite the increasing number of positive cases – making most of them mild cases.

Zamora also noted that local government units have autonomy and can issue an executive order to return mandatory face masks in their locality.

“We will monitor the situation,” he assured.

Meanwhile, Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong has reinstated the mandatory wearing of face masks due to the city’s popularity as a tourist destination, logging 13-14 new cases on a daily basis.

Amidst mixed reactions, several citizens have expressed their warm welcome to the return of the rule. Others have stressed the need for LGU-provided face masks for the poor.

Zamora reminds the public, “Vaccination is key.”
