MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the alert status of Mayon Volcano to Level 3 on Thursday at noon due to a noticeable rise in rockfall incidents that started from June 3.
According to Phivolcs, the raised alert level signifies that Mayon Volcano is currently undergoing a magmatic eruption at its summit, leading to an elevated risk of lava flows and dangerous pyroclastic density currents affecting the upper to middle sections of the volcano.
Additionally, there is a possibility of explosive activity occurring within a matter of weeks or even days.
Phivolcs recommends evacuating residents within the six-kilometer danger zone. Increased vigilance against pyroclastic density currents, lahars, and ash fall is advised.
Pilots should avoid flying near the summit due to potential hazards from ash.
