Over the years, inflation in many countries, especially in the Philippines has been continuously increasing. In the fourth quarter of 2022, onion prices shot up and reached 600 to 700 pesos per kilo.

Netizens talked and posted memes about the crops’ worth. With that, on February 4, 2023, Japan Home Centre’s Panay Avenue branch launched a “Pay with Sibuyas” campaign wherein customers can take home one item priced at 88 pesos or two items on sale by paying one Onion of any size.

The announcement has left a few people questioning how the store will profit from its campaign. JHC Marketing Officer Mitzi Gamboa explained that their main three goals are to attract customers, gain more interactions, and collect onions for their community pantry set to launch on February 9, 2023, 5 days after the campaign.

Gamboa said that some people in their branch’s vicinity are not able to afford basic food necessities because of the high prices brought by the inflation, so they want to help through this campaign and the community pantry.

Japan Home Centre has been selling their products at 88 pesos only despite the drastic price changes over the years and as Gamboa has confirmed, they want and will continue to do that in the future.

"We want to continue offering high-quality products that will give the customers their money’s worth and somehow ease the burden of high prices of goods," she said.
