PH seeks 'space-capable, space-fairing' status by 2030, says DFA

MANILA – The Philippines aims to become a "space-capable and space-faring country by 2030," according to Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo on Tuesday during his press conference in Tokyo with Hayashi Yoshimasa, his Japanese counterpart.

He says that they are recognizing the growing significance of space-based technologies, including disaster risk resilience and climate change.

The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA), founded in 2019 under Republic Act 11363, is the first space agency in Southeast Asia. It is expected to contribute to national security and development, space education, research, industry, capacity building, and more.

According to PhilSA, the Philippines intends to create a team of trained space scientists, engineers, and communicators who will play a crucial role in future space programs to increase public awareness of its value and advantages.

In developing international partnerships and collaborations, The Philippines intends to become a significant player in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the global space community by providing significant contributions and capabilities in space science and technology applications.

In 2022, the Philippine President instructed the PhilSA to map the country's bio-assets and make the data readily available to government agencies.
