PAGASA reports heat index may reach above 40°c, a danger category across Philippine areas

MANILA, Philippines – Pasay City’s PAGASA station reported a heat index of 43 degrees Celsius on Sunday, May 14, marking Metro Manila weather under the “danger” category.

For five consecutive days, Metro Manila’s heat index remains under the same category. Based on PAGASA’s metrics, a heat index under the “danger” category ranges from 42 to 51 degrees Celsius— this state of weather may cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion; subsequently, heat stroke is likely with prolonged sun exposure.

“Yung mga heat indices natin posible pa ring humigit sa 40 degrees Celsius, specifically sa mga probinsya ng Pangasinan, dito rin sa Cagayan and Isabela, Ilocos provinces. For Metro Manila, nasa 38 to 40 degrees Celsius pa rin yung posibleng maramdaman na init. At dito rin sa may Palawan at Albay ay posible pa rin yung higit na 40 degrees na heat index,” PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja warns.

Estareja also states that Davao City, Butuan City, Cotabato City, and General Santos City may experience a heat index above 40 degrees Celsius. An intertropical convergence zone is also expected to trigger isolated rain and thunderstorms over Metro Manila and the rest of the country. PAGASA continues to advise that the heat index may remain within the 40 degrees Celsius and above range, across areas in the Philippines, for the coming days.

Be informed that several areas across the country will have these temperature ranges:
