Genshin Anniversary: Another Disaster?

As Genshin Impact celebrates its second anniversary on September 28, 2022, another wave of radio-silent reactions and unsatiable hunger for more rewards coming from the players have bombarded the threads of various social media platforms. While some compared the anniversary rewards being worse than what was given out last year, many felt the need for more in-game rewards from Hoyoverse than what was given out might be an unnecessary overreaction, and here is why:

On the last anniversary, Hoyoverse and the Genshin Impact community had a heated indirect confrontation regarding celebrating the first anniversary. During its release, little to no in-game rewards were handed out, making players believe that Hoyoverse had made an error with giving out in-game rewards or that they were not generous enough with their player base. Unfortunately, many players had thought of the latter, which caused a massive uproar in the community, with thousands of players demanding extensive rewards. Hoyoverse was forced to comply due to this, and terrible publicity about their image spread like wildfire from many social media platforms. Reports of countless spams within other game surveys, game ratings, other app services, and even official bank apps contained what seemed to be an endless stream of messages containing many players’ voices of discontentment about the anniversary. This outrage became a well-known topic even for non-gamers and has long since become a pool of controversy for the gaming community between game developers and players.

Now that another year has passed, expectations loomed wide for players anticipating the rewards of this year’s anniversary. While some acknowledged and accepted that the in-game rewards might be the same as last year’s case, some clung to the hope that there might be a chance for a new silver lining for better in-game rewards. Fortunately, there was a vast load of in-game rewards that people never expected but was a welcome change:

Hoyoverse has given out a total of 1600 Primogems (in-game currency) to the player base, to no one’s surprise (since last year was the same). While these rewards did not entice players, many voiced satisfaction with what other in-game rewards came with it: an Adepti bird pet, Fragile resins, and a new gadget for them to boot. Not only that- but more in-game rewards were given out during special events within the game that gave more Primogems than what was stated, bestowing many players at the very least, the barest minimum of a “passable” anniversary reward.

While this year’s anniversary didn’t spark as much debate as the previous one, one thing is clear that all players agree on: Hoyoverse is at least listening to its player base, even if it’s a sliver of it. God knows what fiasco would have brewed if they never gave something again.
