Film nostalgia will forever be irreplaceable.
We all have our favorites, be it movies or shows from childhood, those we grew up with, and those we loved as they were newly released. How would you feel if these series were entirely rebooted?
Just this year, rumors circulated that two fan-favorite movie franchises, Twilight and Harry Potter, are being rebooted into TV series.
Harry Potter was a childhood staple. Many adults today used to read them as children and were able to watch them in cinemas when they got adapted into films. It became a comfort series, whether to watch or read, and its fandom grew bigger over the years. Fans may have pinpointed a few missing details from the book, but they still think the films are near-perfect. With that said, Potterheads are so skeptical about the reboot, doubting that it’ll ever top the current movies given how iconic they already are.
Twilight, on the other hand, is getting so much enthusiasm. It’s undeniable that even with its cringeworthy and awkward scenes, the saga was still great to binge. Like the Harry Potter movies, Twilight topped the charts on their premiers. The Twilight fans, especially those who have read the book (me included!), are stoked to hear that it's getting a reboot. Hopefully, the beauty of the books will be executed well in the upcoming series.
Books adapted into movies are always both heavily anticipated and criticized. Fans will always want the best for the characters they want to see come to life. Some books did not get justice in their movie adaptations, so TV shows are giving them another chance.
Cassandra Clare’s bestselling book series, The Mortal Instruments, had an underwhelming film adaptation in 2013. Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower’s visuals cannot keep the franchise afloat. In 2016, the series had a TV show adaptation called Shadowhunters. Although the TV series was better than the movie, they still failed to make the Shadowhunter world unfold.
In other news, another highly anticipated book adaptation coming out in 2024: Percy Jackson. Rick Riordan’s widely loved mythology series is getting retold through a TV series after the lack of success of its two film adaptations. Logan Lerman was the perfect Percy, but the two previous movies were all over the place. Demigods who swore by the books are thrilled to hear about the reboot and expect the TV series to be better and accurately keep the hype of the books.
There are certainly many series that deserve a reboot to give justice to the original story. But some are amazing as it was, and rebooting them will stir some conflict with the fans, so it's best to leave them as classic, untouched motion pictures.
So, what do you think? Is rebooting fairly recent films unnecessary or essential?
