DepEd takes action on Philippine heat wave

The dry season has certainly made an impact in the Philippines and not so much in the best possible way. For the past few weeks, various Filipinos can be seen and heard complaining about this season’s excruciating heat, taking a big toll on most individuals' productivity.

Students especially find it hard to learn in their educational institutions with the humid climate. Not only that, but this has also affected the educators and staff of various institutions. The increase in temperature due to the heat wave can lead to a range of health issues such as headaches, heat strokes, dizziness, and even more severe illnesses caused by heat and exhaustion.

In consideration of the well-being of our youth and their education, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced last April 22, 2023, that they have given authority to the heads of private and public schools nationwide to cancel or suspend in-person classes. Modular Distance Learning was considered to counter the humidity in the summer season, especially from previous announcements from PAGASA, reporting that the cities with the highest heat index found recently were Pasay City (43 degrees), Catarman, Northern Samar, Dagupan City (44 degrees Celsius), Clark Airport in Pampanga (43 degrees Celsius), and Masbate City (44 degrees Celsius), further assessing that the heat would get worse this month of May.

Remote Learning or Online-Classes has been beneficial during the pandemic for students all over the country and the world. This mode of learning is advantageous for students to continue and finish their education and for teachers to be able to finish their syllabus and teachings without risking students and the staff’s health and well-being. Meanwhile, there has been minimal disclosure regarding the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the status of our college students for hybrid classes. However, some universities and colleges have announced that there will be possible suspensions and cancellations due to the weather.
