The Department of Education has reiterated itstheir advocacy against smoking and vaping amongst the youth.
Back in 2022, DepEd backed the Department of Health in appealing to veto the Vaporized Nicotine Products Regulation Act when it was proposed. This has already lapsed into law.
DepEd Asec. Dr. Dexter Galban said that DepEd had has issued an order prohibiting the usage of cigarettes and vapes inside and outside schools on Friday, May 26.
Galban said tobacco companies have been targeting the youth and appealing to them more as they need young people to lure into the habit of buying and using so-called “replacement smokers.” He explained that it is a bigger challenge for education and health advocates to convince the youth to abandon these vices as the tobacco industry hashave been “co-opting” or “hijacking” the message of the real effects of smoking and whether vaping is truly a healthier alternative, consequently warping media literacy and harm perception of said vices.
"One of the major approaches that we have is strengthening the curriculum... So that lahat tayo, merong ambag pagdating sa kung ano nga bang mga mensahe ang pwede nating iambag pagdating dito sa ating health at saka sa mga kabataan," Galban explained.
According to the 2019 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), 12.5% of Filipinos aged 13-15 years used tobacco products, and 14.1% used electronic cigarettes. The GYTS has not been conducted in the Philippines since then.
