R to V: The Red Velvet experience in Manila

The queens of the red castle concluded their "R to V" concert in Manila last May 7!

The award-winning South Korean girl group Red Velvet visited Manila once again for their concert at the Mall of Asia Arena. They have been to Manila three times already, but only as performers at several K-pop music festivals in 2015, 2019, and 2022 respectively. Unfortunately, Joy, one of the members, was unable to perform with the rest of the group due to an unforeseen health condition.

As this is their first solo concert in Manila, they have finally showcased their versatility to the Filipino REVELUVs through their wide-ranging concepts, jaw-dropping vocals, and show-stopping visuals.

Red Velvet opened the concert with their orchestral pop hit "Feel My Rhythm," and city pop B-side "BAMBOLEO" to signify the start of their ‘Red’ concept, which reflects their colorful and upbeat songs. The girls also performed their infamous summer bop "Red Flavor", dance-pop song "Queendom", and the recently released kitsch-coded "Birthday" during the ‘Red’ side of the concert.

After multiple wardrobe changes and set rotations, the girls returned to the stage, and they flaunted different outfits to indicate their ‘Velvet’ concept, which embodies their sultry and dark side. They pitched off with the chic dance pop B-side "Pose" and the hard-hitting R&B B-side "Beg For Me," which really blew the crowd away. They ended the concert proper with their most famous hits; the eerie dance track "Peek-a-Boo," the sexy and slow "Bad Boy," and their biggest hit "Psycho," adding a seductive dance break at the end.

The girls proceeded with the encore and serenaded the crowd with "Celebrate," followed by the soft B-side "My Dear." The crowd thought the girls were done until they reappeared to perform three more songs: the TikTok viral song "Russian Roulette," the crowd favorite "Zimzalabim," and the refreshing "You Better Know," which everyone danced and raved to.

Because Filipino K-pop fans are known to be very enthusiastic and booming during concerts, there’s no doubt that Filipino REVELUVs showed their limitless energy from start to finish. At the time of the ment (messages during the concert), the members said they were very surprised by the loud cheers even before the concert and were in awe because the crowd retained the same energy until the end of the show.

"How can you have this energy for 2 hours? You guys are amazing, seriously," Wendy said in English. Irene also said in Korean, "I think more than anywhere else, you guys have shown the most energy to us— even louder than the World Cup."

Seulgi told the fans in Korean that they should rest and eat throat candies when they get home. Yeri wholeheartedly thanked everyone in English for their loud voices and exclaimed that they would want to be back as soon as possible.

Before the concert, the United from R to V Fan Support prepared fan projects such as banners, tarpaulins, lights, and chants that made the girls very appreciative of all the fans who attended their concert. The fans also prepared a "green ocean" portion for Joy because of her absence.

The members promised the Filipino REVELUVs that they would return with Joy as five members and that they are looking forward to performing again in the Philippines because of the high energy that the crowd gave to the girls.
