Steam’s “Best Game You Suck at” Award goes to…
Elden Ring won the Game Of The Year award along with several other accolades during the Game Awards 2022 held at the Microsoft theater, LA on December 9. The critically acclaimed game received the Game Award for Most Anticipated Game, Best Role Playing Game, Best Art Direction, and Best Game Direction. Not only that, Elden Ring broke the record for receiving the most GOTY awards of all time, garnering a whopping total of 324 awards, surpassing The Last of Us with only 322.
Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Elden Ring and an executive from the game’s development and publishing company, FromSoftware, went up to the stage along with his team to express his gratitude and honor to receive such recognition, and promises for more things to come not only to the game but for their future projects as well. Well-deserved indeed.
From a blade-wielding, gun-slinging hunter to a maidenless, tarnished warrior, FromSoftware had come a long way in raising and redefining today’s standard on gaming entertainment. This holds true to several of its groundbreaking works, including the Lovecraftian horror Bloodborne, the notoriously difficult Dark Souls series, the one-armed shinobi Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and the most critically acclaimed of them all, Elden Ring.
Elden Ring is a fantasy action role-playing open-world game where you play as the Tarnished. Traverse The Land Betweens, a vast mysterious world full of lurking enemies, dungeons filled with treasures, and massive dangerous bosses. Collect runes by defeating them to level up, buy more items, or enhance your weapons and abilities. You will also meet NPCs that will aid you in your journey and give you bits of the game's immersive story. Not to mention, the lore is written by George RR Martin, the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, which is adapted to Game of Thrones, one of the most successful TV series of all time.
I have played Elden Ring myself. I can’t remember how many times I died, but I can’t forget the pure joy and adrenaline rush I felt after defeating a big boss for the first time. The game is more or less as difficult as the Souls series, but it's much more forgiving by having more checkpoints near important areas, a wider platform for boss fights (*cough* Capra Demon *cough*), and a horse you can ride on for ease of exploration.
A fair warning to those who would dare to play the game; Elden Ring isn’t for the faint of heart. FromSoftware’s games are infamously known for their punishing difficulty and Elden Ring’s no different. You might mald over the game and dislike it as a result. However, if you can take the time to carefully learn and overcome the difficulty, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences you can have in video games.
