The reimagining of the classic Disney film, The Little Mermaid, is one of the most anticipated trailers set to debut at D23 Expo 2022. The live-action film, directed by Rob Marshall, is expected to hit theaters on May 26, 2023, starring Halle Bailey (Ariel), Jonah Hauer King (Prince Eric), Melissa McCarthy (Ursula), and a slew of other Hollywood powerhouses.
The news that singer and actress Halle Bailey had been chosen to play Ariel caused a huge uproar for the film. Even with the cast's diversity, the film and Halle, in particular, have received racist remarks as some “fans” of the animated film argued that the film would deviate from its source material due to a fictional character being played by a black woman.
Nonetheless, many fans are looking forward to seeing how the live-action film turns out and what Halle Bailey's Ariel will look like. With her promising vocals and talent, Halle is sure to be a huge part of our world.
Alongside the major announcements of Walt Disney Studios and Pixar, Kevin Feige and Kathleen Kennedy, the heads of Marvel and Lucasfilm, also unveiled upcoming titles on the second day of the D23 Expo along with the cast of the respective films and series. 20th Century Studios has also announced a sequel to the blockbuster hit “Avatar”, directed by James Cameron.
