Grim. Gothic. Genius. These three words pop up when Wednesday Addams from the new Netflix series, Wednesday, comes to mind.
The Addams Family was originally a 50-panel comic published in 1938 and had iconic movie adaptations in 1964 and the 1990s. Netflix is known for its adaptations of classic movies. And they made one for the gothic family we know and love! Wednesday is a spin-off about the most famous and most loved character from The Addams Family, Wednesday Addams.
Announced last October 2022, they revealed that Tim Burton, the famous American film director renowned for his dark and horror movies, will be directing the first four episodes and will be co-producing the show. The cast starring Jenna Ortega (Wednesday Addams), Emma Myers (Enid Sinclair), Hunter Doohan (Tyler Galpin), Percy Hynes White (Xavier Thorpe), Joy Sunday (Bianca Barclay), Gwendoline Christie (Principal Weems), and Christina Ricci (Marilyn Thornhill), all made the fans giddy and excited since most of the cast are famous for their shows and movies; especially Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday Addams in the 1990s movies.
If you’re into supernatural shows, Wednesday will fit right on your watchlist! The first season was released with 8-episodes. The show is about Wednesday Addams transferring to Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts and supernaturals. As usual, she tries to get out of the institute she’s in but because of a series of disturbing events and the beginning of her sudden visions, she decides to stay and solve the mysteries.
Like other teen dramas, there are plenty of love tropes. Fans from all over the world create video edits that contain snippets to showcase their chosen love teams. Since the release, thousands of videos flooded both TikTok and YouTube. There is even a dance trend based on Wednesday’s iconic Rave’N ball dance moves!
Despite all its good reviews, some critics weren’t impressed, saying that it resembles CW supernatural shows, like The Vampire Diaries, too much. But fans defended it and said that it’s unique in its way, and it’s Wednesday! Who doesn’t love her?
Wednesday doesn’t care what those critics say anyway. After all, thousands of normies (and supernatural) loved the show.
How about you? Do you savor the episodes by watching them slowly, or have you watched them all in one sitting?
