Filipinos are surely ending 2022 with a bang! With the rise of Filipino faces and names in music, games, and entertainment, it wasn’t long until we find our fellow countrymen with lead roles in the international cinema scene. Triangle of Sadness and Nocebo are two recent foreign films released this year with performances from Chai Fonacier and Dolly De Leon. Filipino representation continues to grow as the international film industry opens its doors to talented, intelligent, and creative minds from the Philippines. Without giving out any spoilers, here’s what you can expect to see from these films.
Nocebo is a Filipino-Irish psychological thriller film where Diana (played by Chai Fonacier), a caregiver, assists Christine (played by the award-winning French actress Eva Green) in healing her sickness through traditional Filipino folk healing. . The film tackles real fear and emotions with hints of real-world issues that have become a trope in the latest horror movies. Fonacier may be a familiar face to those who saw her star in local films such as “Operation Prutas” and “Miss Bulalacao.” Nocebo was theatrically released last November 4, 2022, and was available on streaming platforms on November 22, 2022.
Another Filipino star making waves in the international scene is Dolly De Leon, who is already known by the western entertainment for her work on HBO Asia’s “Folklore”. You may also recognize her from her roles in “Mirabella” and “Amy’s Mother”. This year, we find De Leon starring as Abigail in Triangle of Sadness, a satirical black comedy film about the relationship between power and beauty. The movie premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival last May 21, 2022, and won the Palme d'Or, the film festival’s top prize.
It’s great to see our local talents with impactful roles that add to the beauty of film and media. Both actresses did a wonderful job in their roles and have given Filipinos great pride and confidence to follow their dreams. We can definitely expect more Filipinos to star in big roles in foreign films as we go forward.
