Christmas might be the most anticipated event annually (aside from birthdays). When people ask why they love celebrating this day, I bet 80% of the answers would be because of the “presents or gift giving”. It has been a tradition to give gifts to our family, friends, and even co-workers. Today, I will take you with me, and we will ride the nostalgia train where we will go back to the times when we only ask for simple things.
Although wishlists aren't that big in the Philippines, children would still find ways to give their parents hints about what they want for Christmas. Usually, the lists consist of toys like Barbies, toy kitchen sets, cars with sounds and matching lights, phones with the “I’m your little butterfly” ringtones, and many more. The children were so happy with these little things that after Christmas, they would show off the toys to their friends. But, of course, nothing lasts forever. And as they grow up, their wishlists will eventually change.
We aren’t satisfied with the simple things anymore. We either go big or go home. We want a new phone, laptop, or keyboard that lights up. We want it desperately because it looks cool. Some would even put pieces of furniture on their lists now. It’s not that bad when you think of it, as we are growing up and our needs change. We prioritize the things we need in day-to-day life - stuff that we can use for a long time.
But receiving toys still warms my heart, and I bet others would too. Sometimes, I wish people would stop shaming adolescents who ask for toys. I still see people who tend to shame others for reliving their childhood in their adult life. What’s wrong with unleashing your inner child?
Honestly though, children these days wish for gadgets more than toys. I guess it depends on the generation, too. But whatever makes us happy right? Each to their own. Happy Holidays to all of you, and I wish you get the gift that you want.
